So, I was getting ready and had some music playing and I heard the song by Lionel Richie called “Easy”. It’s an old song, but such a great one! Yet, today the song really struck a chord with me when I listened to the verse…
Why in the world would anybody put chains on me?
I’ve paid my dues to make it
Everybody wants me to be
What they want me to be
I’m not happy when I try to fake it! no!
Ooh that’s why I’m easy
I’m easy like Sunday morning
That’s why I’m easy
I’m easy like Sunday morning!
How many times has that happened to you? A friend, family member or co-worker wanted you to be what they wanted you to be and not who you authentically are? How did it make you feel? Probably icky, almost uncomfortable in your own skin.
That’s because they’re asking you to not be your authentic self and this isn’t fair!
Being yourself isn’t about standing out. Or being different from others. Being authentic is following your path and not comparing yourself to others. When you try to be ‘fake,’ you are actually disconnecting from what YOU want.
So, I suggest we all stop caring about other people’s expectations of us are! Please believe me…it will set you free. You’ll no longer feel afraid of who you want to be, and your true authentic self will thank you.
For me, my authentic self laughs too loud, loves really big and cries when anything is a heightened emotion…even if that’s an amazing marching band at a parade. I just let me be me and surround myself with the people who love this person!
So, I ask all of you….who is your authentic self?
